Need it? Order it, Use It!

Need it? Order it, Use It! is the name of NHS Eastern Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group's medicines waste awareness campaign.

In partnership with local GP surgeries, pharmacies, patients and carers across Cheshire East, NHS Eastern Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group have developed a medicines waste awareness campaign to drive home the message that medicines wastage is everybody's responsibility.

Did you know that approximately £3 million per year of tax payer's money in Cheshire is wasted through unused medication?

Key Messages

Need It?

  • Only order what you need - check your stock at home before ordering your repeat prescription
  • It is ok to ask about your medicines - talk to your GP, nurse or pharmacist about any problems you are having with your medication
  • If you find your medication does not suit you or you are not taking the medicine that you have been prescribed, please let your GP, nurse or pharmacist know as they can help you.

Order it

  • Your GP practice or local pharmacy can help you to order all the medicines you take regularly, together at the same time
  • Does somebody order your repeat prescription on your behalf? Let them know which items are needed before they place the order

Use It!

  • Unwanted medication cannot be reused, it has to be destroyed even if it is sealed.
  • Remember not to stockpile medicines that you don't use or that could go out of date
  • If you want to dispose of unwanted medication, you can do so safely at your local pharmacy

The Context

A report commissioned by the Department of Health looks at the ways in which the NHS is working to improve the use of medicines and tackle avoidable medicines wastage. The action plan outlines how best practice could be shared across the NHS in the future.

The plan identifies how everybody - not just pharmacists, GPs and care home staff, but also patients and the public - can stop avoidable medicines wastage.

The report, ‘Improving the use of medicines for better outcomes and reduced waste: An action plan’, covers making more effective use of medicines in primary and community care, in secondary care and in care homes and end of life care. It also looks at how patients can be better engaged in decisions about their medicines and how information about medicines can be better provided to patients and health and care professionals.
